Care Guide

Ficus hedge care guide

A few simple habits make the difference between a Ficus hedge that fills in fast and one that struggles. Here's how we tell our customers to care for theirs in Southern California.

Watering

For the first 6–8 weeks after planting, water deeply 3 times per week so the entire root ball stays moist but not waterlogged. After that, shift to deep watering 2 times per week through the warm season, and once a week in winter. Drip irrigation on a timer is ideal.

Pruning & shearing

Light shearing 2–3 times a year keeps a Hollywood-style flat face and encourages dense interior branching. Don't let a young hedge get tall and leggy before its first shear — early shaping is what gives you a thick wall later.

Feeding

A balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer is plenty. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeds that push soft, weak growth.

Pests & common issues

Watch for Ficus whitefly and thrips, which can cause leaf curl or drop. Spot-treat early with horticultural oil or a systemic if needed. Yellowing usually means too much water — let the top inch of soil dry between waterings.
